Bayern Munich vs Mönchengladbach Player Ratings
  • Harry Kane and Olise score in 2-0 win for Bayern Munich.
  • Thomas Muller bows out in style after a huge farewell.
  • Neuer had a great game to remember for ages.

A joyful Allianz Arena bore witness to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Mönchengladbach that saw them kickstart their championship party. Goals from Harry Kane and Michael Olise saw club legend Thomas Muller end his Bayern career on a high.

Before the game, there was a ceremony to honor Bayern legend Thomas Müller ahead of what was his last game for the club after a long and glittering career.

Bayern made 5 changes to their side, with Manuel Neuer making a comeback and Harry Kane returning from suspension. Guerreiro, Coman, and Goretzka were the other three who started the game. For Mönchengladbach, three changes were made to their side, with Elvedi, Sander, and Lainer making starts. If there was any championship celebration hangover from Bayern, it was not visible as the hosts took advantage of a raucous home crowd and went on the attack right from the off. But it was Mönchengladbach who almost took the lead.

Stefan Lainer initially aimed a cross with the hope that a team-mate would get their head on it, but it was headed towards goal and it needed evasive action from the returning Neuer to keep that out.

That attempt roused Bayern into action as the chances for the home side flew in thick and fast. Joshua Kimmich had a pop from range which was blocked, before Kane's header was comfortably saved by the Gladbach keeper. Kimmich then put in a beautiful cross in the box that just avoided Guerreiro despite the latter's despairing dive.

For all their domination, Gladbach almost turned party-spoilers as a headed attempt by Lainer took a wicked deflection off Dier, which was brilliantly saved by Neuer to keep the scoreline goalless.

Bayern continued to press on and were eventually rewarded as they took the lead. Olise got the ball on the right flank before going on his usual trickery of cutting in and unleashed a wicked shot from just inside the box. While his shoat was indeed goal-bound, it took the telling touch of Harry Kane before nestling in the back of the net. While it was eventually credited as a Kane goal, Olise's contribution should not be understated.

To their credit, Gladbach continued to fight tooth and nail and were almost level with Robin Hack's shot was well-saved by Neuer before a tame header by Kliendienst was calmly collected by Neuer before the whistle for half-time was blown.

The second half was a case of Bayern trying hard to get that second goal to put the game to bed once and for all, while Gladbach also did not stop throwing punches of their own. The visitors had quite a few good chances that kept the Bayern defense honest and occupied, but Neuer was like a man possessed as he repelled everything with authority.

Muller tried hard to get a farewell goal, but was not successful. He was eventually subbed off for the final time in Allianz arena as he was given a hero's ovation.

The game was eventually sealed with Sane assisting Olise on the stroke of the 90th minute to put the game to bed with a 2-0 scoreline.

GK- Manuel Neuer- 8/10

Was a commendable return from injury for the veteran. Showed agility, reflexes and command of the box in equal measure. Made some good saves to keep the Gladbach attack at bay

RB- Konrad Laimer- 6/10

A comsistent presence going forward on the right side. Had a good outing with his crossing and running.

RCB- Eric Dier- 6/10

The departing defender had a rather good shift today. Sprayed the ball well and long. Defended robustly on occasion.

LCB- Josip Stanišić- 6/10

Smart in possession, calm and calculated in defense. Had a good physical battle with Kleindienst. Was subbed after the hour mark.

LB- Raphael Guerreiro- 6/10

The Portuguese was the right balance between defense and attack. Held his own in defense while being aggressive in attack. Was a whisker away from scoring in the first half.

CDM- Joshua Kimmich- 7.5/10

The skipper was his metronomic self. Immaculate passing saw him create at least 2 big chances. Always a reliable presence in the middle.

CDM- Leon Goretzka- 7/10

The big German was everywhere as he complemented Kimmich well like he always does. 94% pass accuracy with 3 out of 4 successful long balls.

RW- Michael Olise- 9/10

The Frenchman has been sensational and tonight was no different. Ran, dribbled, and torched the Gladbach defense time and time again. Should have had the goal but had to settle for the assist after Kane's touch. He would get his goal eventually after a lovely finish in the box.

CAM- Thomas Müller- 6/10

The retiring legend tried everything to get a goal in his final game but it just did not happen. Ran the channels well and kept popping in pockets of space. He will be sorely missed in these parts of the country.

LW- Kingsley Coman- 6/10

Had a pretty average game for his standards. Did everything well without imposing himself completely on the game. Subbed after the hour.

ST- Harry Kane- 7.5/10

The Englishman opened the scoring with a rather lucky headed touch, but was immense in the build-up with and without possession. Kept dropping deep and picking the passes to open up Gladbach.

Sub- Aleksandar Pavlovic- 5.5/10

Did well after coming on. Solid but not spectacular

A late sub. Did not make much of an impact.

A late sub. Did not make much of an impact.

Sub- Gabriel Vidovic- N/A

A late sub. Did not make much of an impact.

Manager- Vincent Kompany- 7/10

As perfect a game that could happen. Made the right team choices, saw his team play with full energy and intensity. Gave Muller his farewell with dignity, and eventually won the game rather comfortably.

GK- Jonas Omlin- 5.5/10

Could do absolutely nothing to prevent the goal. Pulled off a couple of decent saves and commanded his box fairly well.

RB- Stefan Lainer- 5/10

Was aggressive and firm on defense, with tackles and interceptions. However, he was not able to replicate that in attack with none of his crosses finding the target.

RCB- Nico Elvedi- 5.5/10

Had a decent game until he was subbed at half time. Efficient in the tackle and measured in possession.

LCB- Fabio Chiarodia- 6/10

Arguably Gladbach's best defender. Contributed majorly in defense with his heading and was also a fair threat in attack with set-pieces.

LB- Lukas Ullrich- 4.5/10

Was given a rinsing by Olise time and time again. Was easily turned inside out by Olise for the opening goal.

CDM- Philipp Sander- 5/10

Tried to be everywhere, but was not able to do it with regularity. Had a middling game with a 50% success rate in almost every category.

CDM- Julian Weigl- 6/10

The wily customer was a steady presence in midfield. Shielded his backline well and tried to keep things constantly moving for his side.

RW- Franck Honorat- 6/10

Was a bright spark and outlet on the right. Put in 5 crosses in the box and should have easily had at least one assist if not for his side's profligacy.

CAM- Rocco Reitz- 5/10

Did not have the best of games as he could not create much of note from the number 10 role. Was subbed off and rightly so.

LW- Robin Hack- 5.5/10

Had a shot well-saved and two shots that were blocked. Was constantly involved in his side's attacking moves from time to time.

ST- Tim Kleindienst- 5.5/10

Was profligate as he kept on missing promising chances for his side. Forgot his shooting boots as it just was not his day.

Sub- Joseph Scally- 5/10

Tried to bring energy and industry to his side. Was not able to influence the game enough though.

Sub- Alassane Plea- N/A

A late sub. Did not make much of an impact.

Sub- Florian Neuhaus- N/A

A late sub. Did not make much of an impact.

Sub- Tomáš Čvančara- N/A

A late sub. Did not make much of an impact.

Sub- Kevin Stöger- N/A

A late sub. Did not make much of an impact.

Manager- Gerardo Seoane- 5/10

The manager saw his side give a good fight but fall short due to the profligacy of his forwards. Could have made his subs a little earlier.

Sportsdunia Player of the Match goes to Michael Olise.
