Werder Bremen Vs Freiburg Player Ratings

Summary

  • The match between saw Bremen vs Freiburg ended with a scoreline of 3-0
  • Noah Atubolu became the highest rated player
  • Cameron Puertas became the lowest rated player

This was a demolition job. From our perspective, SC Freiburg didn't just win; they dismantled a hapless Werder Bremen side in their own backyard. The 3-0 scoreline almost flatters the home team. It felt like a contest between a well-oiled machine and a team that had forgotten how to play football.

The writing was on the wall early. Cameron Puertas's moment of madness, a senseless handball, gifted Vincenzo Grifo the opener from the spot. But the true turning point, the moment Bremen's spirit shattered into a million pieces, was Noah Atubolu's sensational penalty save. That stop was the highlight of this Bundesliga fixture.

After that, it was one-way traffic. Junior Adamu added a second before a comical own goal from Karim Coulibaly completed the humiliation. It was a tactical masterclass from Freiburg and a day of utter despair for Bremen in this match.

Werder Bremen Player Ratings vs SC Freiburg

Here are Werder Bremen Player Ratings vs Freiburg

Goalkeeper

Mio Backhaus - 6.5: It's tough to fault the keeper when your team collapses like this. He conceded three, but the penalty was perfect and the own goal was just unlucky. He actually made a few good saves to prevent the score from getting even uglier. Stood no chance on the second goal either. We noticed his distribution was solid, finding his man every time.

Defenders

Yukinari Sugawara - 5.0: A really quiet game from the full-back, which is never a good sign. He offered very little going forward, with only one successful cross to his name. Defensively, he was part of a unit that was pulled apart with ease. He just seemed a step off the pace today.

Karim Coulibaly - 4.5: Oh dear. His performance will be remembered for that horrible own goal. He was in the wrong place at the wrong time and his touch was clumsy. Before that moment he was actually having a decent game, winning duels and passing well. But an own goal of that nature just tanks your rating.

Marco Friedl - 6.0: The captain tried to hold things together but it was an impossible task. He sprayed the ball around effectively, completing 12 long balls, and made a few important tackles. However, he was the leader of a defence that conceded three goals and looked shambolic. He needed to organize his backline better.

Felix Agu - 5.0: A difficult evening for Agu. He was booked for a clumsy challenge and struggled to contain Freiburg's wide players. He lost possession ten times and was flagged offside in a promising position. Just wasn't his day, and he looked frustrated for most of the match.

Midfielders

Jens Stage - 5.5: Ran around a lot but with very little effect. He put in a shift but his passing was off, losing the ball nine times in just 60 minutes. He picked up a deserved yellow card for a poor tackle before being substituted. We expected more from him in the middle of the park.

Justin Njinmah - 6.0: One of the few Bremen players who actually looked threatening, at least in the first half. He forced a couple of good saves from the keeper and showed some nice touches. He faded as the game went on and was eventually subbed off. A glimmer of hope in a dark performance.

Senne Lynen - 6.5: Probably Bremen's best outfield player, which isn't saying much. He was tidy in possession with an 89% pass accuracy and created two chances for his teammates. He kept trying to make things happen but was fighting a losing battle. A respectable effort in a disastrous team performance.

Cameron Puertas - 3.5: A performance to forget. What was he thinking for the penalty? A completely unnecessary handball that put his team on the back foot. He was a foul machine, lost the ball 16 times, and received a yellow card. From our perspective, he was the worst player on the pitch.

Romano Schmid - 4.0: This rating is all about one moment. The missed penalty. At 2-0 down, that was the chance to get back into the game, and he fluffed it. His body language after the miss said it all. The confidence was gone. He missed a big chance and his game fell apart after that.

Forwards

Marco Grüll - 5.0: Completely anonymous. He touched the ball 40 times in 90 minutes and did nothing with it. He was booked for dissent and just looked completely out of ideas. Grüll offered no threat and was easily handled by the Freiburg defence.

Substitutes

Substitutes - 5.0: The substitutes brought on by Bremen made little to no impact on the game. Victor Boniface, Isaac Schmidt, Keke Topp, Patrice Covic, and Leonardo Bittencourt were thrown on but the game was already lost. They couldn't change the momentum at all.

Manager

H. Steffen - 4.0: His team looked tactically naive and devoid of confidence. They were outplayed and out-thought in every department. His substitutions were ineffective, and there seemed to be no Plan B after going behind. A really poor day at the office for the manager.

Goalkeeper

Noah Atubolu - 9.0: Absolutely phenomenal. The man of the match and it's not even close. The penalty save was the game-winning moment. He made five saves in total, commanded his box, and his distribution was excellent. A truly heroic performance that secured the three points for his team. The highest-rated player on the pitch by a mile.

Defenders

Philipp Lienhart - 7.5: A very solid and composed performance at the back. He was calm under pressure and read the game brilliantly. He made three clearances and was a key part of a defence that earned a clean sheet. An easy day's work for a defender of his quality.

Lukas Kübler - 7.0: A really professional performance from the right-back. He did his defensive duties diligently and supported the attack when needed. He even created a chance for his teammates. The yellow card was a minor blemish on an otherwise excellent display.

Matthias Ginter - 8.0: A defensive masterclass. Ginter was a giant at the back, winning everything in the air and on the ground. He made a staggering eight clearances and two interceptions. He organised the defence perfectly and ensured Bremen's forwards had no space to operate in.

Jordy Makengo - 6.5: A mixed bag, but mostly positive. He foolishly gave away a penalty with a handball, which could have been costly. However, he was bailed out by his goalkeeper. Besides that mistake he was very good, recovering the ball nine times and showing great composure.

Midfielders

Patrick Osterhage - 7.0: An energetic and effective performance in the heart of midfield. He won four of his seven duels and was a disruptive force. He kept the ball moving and didn't allow Bremen's midfielders any time to settle. A proper engine room display.

Maximilian Eggestein - 7.5: Controlled the tempo of the game from midfield. His 90% pass accuracy shows how tidy he was in possession. He made two interceptions and was always in the right position to break up play. A very intelligent and disciplined performance.

Lucas Höler - 7.5: A fantastic all-round display. He was a nuisance for the Bremen defence, creating two chances and winning five duels. He worked tirelessly for the team, making three interceptions and tracking back whenever needed. An unsung hero of this victory.

Niklas Beste - 6.5: A solid if unspectacular outing. He won all three of his tackles and drew two fouls, helping his team get up the pitch. He was a willing runner but didn't provide the final product before being substituted. Did his job for the team.

Vincenzo Grifo - 8.5: What a player. He was the creative spark for Freiburg. He coolly dispatched his penalty, provided the assist for the second goal and even hit the woodwork. He created two big chances and ran the show for 69 minutes. A magical performance from the captain.

Forwards

Junior Adamu - 8.0: Led the line brilliantly. He took his goal with a clinical finish, showing great composure in front of goal. What stood out to us was his incredible aerial ability, winning eight aerial duels. He was a constant handful and deserved his goal.

Substitutes

Substitutes - 7.0: The substitutes came on and maintained the team's high standards. Derry Scherhant looked lively, while Philipp Treu, Eren Dinkçi, Igor Matanovic, and Anthony Jung helped see out the game comfortably. A professional job from the entire squad.

Manager

J. Schuster - 8.5: His game plan was executed to perfection. His team was organized in defence, clinical in attack, and ruthless in midfield. He identified Bremen's weaknesses and exploited them perfectly. The decision to let Grifo dictate the play was a masterstroke. A flawless away performance orchestrated by the manager.
