Real Sociedad de Futbol, also known as Real Sociedad, is a Spanish club based in the Basque region. It is one of Spain's most historic clubs and was founded in 1909 in San Sebastian. The club, along with Athletic Bilbao, represents the Basque region, incorporating tradition with ambition but with a modern touch. The club's origin dates back to 1904, when it was formed through a merger between two local football clubs - San Sebastian Recreation Club and Club Ciclista de San Sebastian. In 1910, they were formally founded after they were granted the ‘Real’ title, which translates to ‘Royal’ in Spanish, by King Alfonso XIII. Real Sociedad is known for its exciting brand of football, which is quite uncommon in the clubs lower in stature than the Big Three in Spain - Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid.

The club's golden years started in the early 1980s when they won back-to-back La Liga titles. However, their most recent triumph remains the Copa Del Rey win in 2020. They finished 11th in the table last season and will be looking to turn things around this time under their new manager, Sergio Francisco.

Real Sociedad History & Key Facts

Let's take a look at Real Sociedad history. The club was initially founded in 1904 through a merger between two local football clubs named Sebastian Recreation Club and Club Ciclista de San Sebastian. Football was introduced in this region through the youths who came to study or work here from Britain. During the early years, the team enjoyed some success but weren't able to compete in the official leagues due to not being registered in the Companies Register. Therefore, to play in the 1909 Spanish Championship, the club played under the name of Club Ciclista (cycling club), which met the required criteria of being able to play in the Championship. It was under this name that the club lifted its first silverware, as they defeated Espanyol de Madrid in the Copa del Rey final in 1909 by a margin of 3-1. After the Copa del Rey triumph, the players decided to break away and legally formed the Sociedad de Futbol on 7th September, 1909, under the presidency of Adolfo Saenz Alonso. On 11th February 1910, they were granted the ‘Real’ (royal in Spanish) title by King Alonso XIII.

Real Sociedad stadium in their early days was the Ondaretta stadium, where they played from 1909 to 1913. Sociedad then moved on to the Atotxa stadium, which was formally opened on 5th October, 1913, and served as the home ground for the club for a tenure of 80 years. The Real Sociedad home ground opened with a match against Athletic Bilbao, one of their fiercest rivals in the Spanish top flight. Later, it shifted to Anoeta in 1993, which is now known as the Reale Arena.

The club was one of the founding members of La Liga in 1929. By the end of the 1920s, football had gained much traction from all over the world and had to meet the supporters' demand and the financial needs of the club to make an entry into the professional structure, just like the English league. The minimalists argued that the Primera Division should start with the teams that have won the Copa del Rey at some point in their history, while the maximalists argued that it should include the runners-up too. In 1928, it was decided that the Spanish top flight would start with 10 teams, with Real Sociedad being one of those ten teams. Real Sociedad history is full of ups and downs, but it is also a testament to the club's vision of toiling hard to make an impact in the world of football.

Real Sociedad Rivalries

Real Sociedad has two rivals mainly in the Spanish top flight currently - Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid. The rivalry with Athletic Bilbao is a bigger one than with the Los Blancos, as both La Real and Athletic Bilbao come from the Basque region. While the rivalry with Real Madrid isn't something traditional, the encounters have been quite intense over the years. In the years when La Real won back-to-back La Liga titles, they competed directly with the dominance of Real Madrid, and that's how the rivalry began.

Real Sociedad Derbies

Real Sociedad Fan Following

Real Sociedad fans are known to be quite loyal and humble. The fanbase takes much pride in their team due to their performance despite being low in resources as compared to the other top teams of the league. Real Sociedad stadium, Reale Arena, is a graveyard for the visiting teams, as the fans make a heated atmosphere that is too hard to take for most of the teams. Real Sociedad home ground had been one of the cursed away grounds for clubs like FC Barcelona for some time, as the Catalan club once went winless for almost a decade before finally managing to take a win out of San Sebastian in 2017. Real Sociedad fans are quite passionate about their players and the club and have stuck with their club through thick and thin.

Future Goals

After finishing 11th in the league last season, Real Sociedad will look to finish in the top half of the table this season under their new manager Sergio Francisco. They will look to grab a European spot and possibly be the finalists in one of the domestic cup competitions.
