The Ukrainian Association of Football is the governing body for everything related to football in the country. In fact, it is the main reason behind the development of the current Ukraine Football Team players. Founded back in 1991, UAF joined UEFA and FIFA in 1992. With the inception of the governing body, Ukraine's footballing journey began.
UAF oversees all the grassroots development programs, domestic leagues, and the management of both male and female national football teams. The most iconic moment in the history of UAF came in 2024 when Andriy Shevchenko was elected as the president of UAF. After being a national hero as a Ukrainian player, Shevchenko also had a spell as a manager. His journey as a footballing icon in Ukraine is now complete with his presidential role. His leadership's main focus is on modernizing the infrastructure and promoting grassroots development. Andriy Shevchenko and the team of UAF ensure that the country has a consistent presence in top-level football.
Even before an independent nation, Ukraine had a rich heritage in football. Ukrainian players like Oleg Blokhin and Igor Belanov represented the Soviet Union team before independence. In addition to leading the Soviet Union team, they were also Ballon d'Or winners. While the country never lacked talent, after their journey began as an independent footballing nation, the Ukraine National Football Team had a slow start. The country's first official match took place on 29th April 1992 against Hungary. In the majority of the 1990s, the team went through a period of transition, struggling to qualify for the major tournaments. However, it was the formative years of the team that laid out the foundation for the future.
As there are big clubs emerging like Shakhtar Donetsk and Dynamo Kyiv, the Ukraine National Football Team saw a consistent supply of natural talent in the team.
The biggest breakthrough of the Ukraine National Football Team came during the FIFA World Cup 2006 campaign when the country reached the quarter finals under the leadership of Andriy Shevchenko, who was chosen as the Ukraine National Football Team manager after he hung up his boots. Another big moment came in 2012 when Ukraine qualified as the co-host for the UEFA Euro 2012. Over the years, there has been consistent performance from the Ukraine National Football Team.
