Kane Williamson Joins Lucknow Super Giants in a New Role for IPL 2026

Kane Williamson, the veteran New Zealand cricketer, may have gone unsold in the last IPL auction, but he's now found a new role with the Lucknow Super Giants. According to reports, LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka personally requested Williamson to join the franchise for IPL 2026, but the interesting part is that he hasn't joined as a player, but as a strategic advisor.

He will replace Indian bowling legend Zaheer Khan, who was the team's mentor during the 2025 IPL season. Notably, Kane Williamson hasn’t retired from international cricket. However, he has chosen to step away from New Zealand’s central contract system to concentrate more on playing in franchise leagues around the world.

Ahead of the upcoming 2026 IPL mini-auction, Kane Williamson will bring his wealth of cricketing experience to help guide the team’s planning and is most likely to be involved in the key decision-making process at the auction table.

In addition to bringing Kane Williamson on board, the Lucknow Super Giants have also retained Australian Justin Langer as their head coach. They've further made changes in their support staff by appointing former England cricketer Carl Crowe as the spin bowling coach, a role he previously held with the Kolkata Knight Riders. Earlier this year, Bharat Arun was also brought in to oversee the bowling department. Team owner Sanjiv Goenka has emphasized the value of building an experienced strategic team to guide the squad both on and off the field.

Williamson is a seasoned T20 campaigner and one of the IPL's more consistent performers. He knows what the richest cricket league in the world demands. Over 79 IPL matches, he has scored 2,128 runs at an average of 35.47 and a strike rate of 125.62.
