If one peeks at Devin Booker’s career from the start, one can always tell he was destined for greatness. Booker never backed down from showing grit and determination in his game and was always a dedicated student of the game. Furthermore, his father’s constant intervention throughout his career further elevated him to greater heights. Devin inherited his father’s basketball heritage, which allowed him to establish himself as a superstar in the NBA. Here’s a brief description of his career, from his stint playing for his high school team to joining the NBA.

Devin Booker High School Career

Devin Booker played in basketball teams for Grandville High School in Michigan and Moss Point High School in Mississippi during his high school tenure. He was a standout player for both teams and was named a McDonald’s All-American in 2014.
Booker’s decision to move from Grandville to Moss Point, Mississippi, in his freshman year profoundly impacted him. “It was a culture shock for me,” Booker said. The decision came in 2011 when Booker moved from his mother’s place in Michigan to his father’s in Mississippi. Melvin Booker further pushed his son to make this move so that Devin could develop more holistically in his basketball career.

Finding a new environment at Moss Point, Booker thrived playing basketball and averaged 30.9 points per game as a senior. He also participated in camps such as LeBron James Skills Academy, Kevin Durant Skills Academy, the CP3 Elite Guard Camp, and the NBA Players Association Top 100 camp. His fellow participants at the NBAPA camp voted him to the camp’s 10-man All-Star team. He also participated in the Under Armour Elite 24 showcase and won the three-point shooting contest. After officially visiting the University of Kentucky, Booker announced his decision to commit to Kentucky on October 31, 2014.

Devin Booker College Career

Devin Booker was a standout player for the University of Kentucky right from the start. In an exhibition game against the University of Pikeville, Booker was the second leading scorer for the team with 16 points and three assists, shooting 6/9 from the field, including two three-pointers. He again had another 15-point, 6-rebound, 7-assist standout game against Boston University, followed by a then-season-high 18 points in a win against Montana State.

Booker played 38 games for Kentucky in 2014-15 and averaged 10.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.1 assists. Subsequently, he earned SEC Sixth Man of the Year, SEC All-Freshman Team, and All-SEC Second Team honors. On April 19, 2015, Booker declared for the NBA draft by forgoing his final three years of college eligibility.

Devin Booker Professional Career

In his heydays at Phoenix, Booker was steadily establishing his authority as an elite, young shooting guard by boosting his scoring, assists, and rebounding averages over time. One of the highlight moments of his career was his 70-point game against the Boston Celtics during his sophomore season. Booker went 21/40 hitting twos, 4/11 from beyond the arc, and 24/26 from the free-throw line. Within the span of just two seasons, the young Suns guard became the youngest player in the league’s history to score at least 50 points in back-to-back games. The 2018-19 season was a breakout season for Book, where he was averaging 26.6 points and 6.8 assists per game.

Though Booker was flourishing individually in his career, the Phoenix Suns were still performing quite abysmally to the contrary. In fact, the Suns ranked as one of the worst teams in the NBA for many seasons. Booker’s first taste of success was in the 2020-21 season when the Suns reached the NBA Finals to face the Milwaukee Bucks. Despite posting two back-to-back 40-point games in the series, the Suns lost to the Bucks in six games.

As of now, Booker plays alongside NBA superstar Kevin Durant to form an elite backcourt for the Suns. However, the said elite backcourt has not been able to translate into success in the league. Despite adding Bradley Beal to the mix, the Phoenix Suns are struggling to contend for the playoffs in the 2024-25 season.

While Booker still maintains his eliteness as a level All-Star in the league, he still requires the right roster around him that could translate into him aiming for a chip with the team. In all fairness, Booker is definitely one of the most legendary figures to create an impact for Arizona basketball.
