Atletico Madrid vs Dortmund Player Ratings as Antoine Griezmann is showcasing his exceptional creativity

Atletico Madrid have managed to get the win at home and become the only home side to go into the second leg with an advantage this season in the quarterfinals. 

Rodrigo de Paul opened the scoring for the Spanish after a smart interception of Ian Maatsen’s pass in the 4th minute. The home side were quick to double the lead, once again thanks to Dortmund, as Hummels and Schlot­terbeck has a nervy moment and it helped Griezmann set up Savio Lino in the 32nd minute.

Jan Oblak – 7 – Was called into action in the second half and he did well. Made three saves in the game and could do very little about the goal.

Axel Witsel – 7 – Playing a center-back in a back three, Witsel made it look easy at time to handle Fullkurg and Adeyemi. 

José María Giménez – 7 – The Uruguayan was also on top of his game and helped out keeping Fullkurg and Nmecha under wraps.

César Azpilicueta – 7.5 – Pick of the defenders as the former Chelsea star rolled back years and delivered a top notch performance. 

Nicolas Molina – 7.5 – The right wing-back managed to do his defensive duties to perfection but was unable to do well in attack. 

Marcos Llorente – 7 – Started as a central midfielder and finished the game at right-back. The Spaniard was everywhere for the Spanish side today. 

Koke – 7.5 – A captain’s performance from the Spaniard today as he kept his calm throughout the game and controlled the midfield. 

Rodrigo de Paul – 8 – The Argentine was at his best today and scored the opening goal to help settle the nerves. That got them going today but made a mistake that let to Dortmund getting a shot away. 

Savio Lino – 7 – Manchester City are chasing the winger and he showed exactly why. He started as a left wing-back but played more like a left-winger in attack, which helped him get the goal. 

Álvaro Morata – 6 – An off day for the Spaniard as he was just not able to get things going on the pitch. He played 64 minutes and managed just three shots, with just one being on target. 

Antoine Griezmann – 9 – A top-notch display yet again from the Frenchman when needed by Atletico Madrid. Did not get on the scoresheet, but was key to every attack from the home side and got an assist.

Pablo Barrios – 6.5 – The youngster replaced Morata in the 64th minute but did manage to make a big impact. 

Angel Correa – 6 – Managed a tame shot on target, but was insignificant otherwise. 

Stefan Savic – 6 – Hardly made an impact after coming on in the final minutes. 

Rodrigo Riquelme – 6 – Hardly made an impact after coming on in the final minutes. 

Saul Niguez – 6 – Hardly made an impact after coming on in the final minutes. 

Borussia Dortmund player ratings 

Gregor Kobel – 8.5 – The best player on the pitch for Dortmund. He has single handedly kept them in the tie with 7 incredible saves. 

Julian Ryerson – 7.5 – The pick of the Dortmund defenders today but was unable to do much to stop Lino and Griezmann. 

Mats Hummels – 5.5 – Comedy of errors at the back led to the two goals for Atletico Madrid. 

Nico Schlot­terbeck – 6 – Was also responsible for the goals today and needs to do a lot to get them back in the game next week.

Ian Maatsen – 6.5 – The Chelsea loanee could not do much today and was easily one of his worst since making the move. 

Marcel Sabitzer – 7 – A decent outing but should have done a lot more in attack as they lacked his intelligence. 

Emre Can – 7 – Another Dortmund star who had a lot more to do with the defense than attack. Defended well but should have done more in attack to help them make a comeback.

Jadon Sancho – 7.5 – The pick of the Dortmund attackers today as he kept going until the end. However, his lone shot was off target in the game. 

Felix Nmecha – 6 – Played just 45 minutes and it will be an appearance he would like to forget quickly. 

Karim Adeyemi – 6.5 – Was looking to attack at all chances but had both his shots blocked. Could not trouble Jan Oblak. 

Niclas Füllkrug – 7 – Managed just 13 touches in his 60 minutes of the pitch. Hardly made things difficult for the Atletico Madrid defense. 

Julian Brandt – 7.5 – Showed Dortmund exactly what they were missing after coming on at half time. Hit the post with the final shot of the game!

Seb Haller – 7.5 – Played just 30 minutes but got the all important goal that has brought Dortmund back into the game. 

Jamie Bynoe-Gittens – 6.5 – Was a livewire on the left flank in the final minutes and that caused a lot of trouble. 

Marcos Reus – 6 – Did not make any significant impact after coming on late in the game.

Salih Ozcan – 6 – Did not make any significant impact after coming on late in the game.
