Varun Chakravarthy is renowned as a lethal bowler and a ‘mystery spinner’ for India; however, on Sunday, June 22, he became a hero with the bat. The second-highest wicket-taker of the Champions Trophy 2025, Varun, helped Dindigul Dragons win a thrilling Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) match, in which they beat SKM Salem Spartans by two wickets in a last-ball finish at the Indian Cement Company Ground in Tirunelveli.

In the match, Dindigul Dragons were chasing 189 runs. In the last over, they needed 11 runs to win. Salem’s bowler M Poiyamozhi, bowled well as he gave away only 3 runs in the first four balls. He also took the wicket of M Karthik Saran. It looked like the Salem Spartans would win.

Poiyamozhi bowled a no-ball, and this changed the momentum. Varun was on strike, and he hit the free-hit ball for a big six over long-on. Then, he smashed the final ball for a four past the infield. The Dindigul dugout erupted in joy, and the players were jumping and cheering. It was a thrilling two-wicket win.

Ravichandran Ashwin Gets Emotional In TNPL

Varun Chakravarthy TNPL cameo with the bat was totally unexpected, and it left his team's captain, Ravichandran Ashwin, in shock. Ashwin got emotional as his team won a match that they had almost lost. As the others celebrated, he sat still with his head down and hands over it. Then, he looked up and smiled in disbelief.

Ashwin had played a big role earlier in the match. He gave his team a fiery start. He scored 35 runs from just 14 balls. His knock included five fours and two sixes. With him leading from the front as Dindigul reached 50 runs in just 20 balls.

Other batters also played well. Shivam Singh scored 34 off 24 balls. R K Jayant made 25 off 15. Hunny Saini added 35 off 28 while Vimal Khumar chipped in with useful runs. Together, they helped Dindigul stay in the chase. Ashwin also bowled beautifully. He took 3 wickets for just 22 runs in his four overs. His all-round performance was key to the team’s win.

Fine Victory for Dindigul Dragons

This was Dindigul Dragons’ third win in the TNPL 2025 season. They now have six points from five matches and are in third place on the table. Chepauk Super Gillies are at the top and have already qualified for the playoffs. In second place are IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans. They also have six points but a better net run rate than Dindigul.

Dindigul Dragons have two more matches left in the league stage. They will play against Nellai Royal Kings on June 26 in Tirunelveli. Their final league match is against Trichy Grand Cholas on June 29 at home. To reach the playoffs, Dindigul must win both matches.

Notably, Varun Chakravarthy’s mini cameo will be remembered for a long time. Known for his bowling, he showed he can also deliver with the bat when it matters most. His 10 runs off the last two balls won the match. It was a reminder that cricket is a game of surprises. And sometimes, the hero comes from where you least expect, and as for Dindigul, this win keeps their playoff hopes alive.
