Why Cole McConchie is Not Playing Today

India and New Zealand are battling it out in the T20 World Cup 2026 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The Men in Blue will look to defend their title while the Kiwis will aim to get their hands on the trophy for the first time ever.

New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner won the toss and opted to bowl first. However, the Kiwi captain also announced a surprising change as their star spin-bowling all-rounder Cole McConchie has been dropped from the playing XI.

Why Cole McConchie is Not Playing Today in T20 World Cup Final?

Cole McConchie is an off-spin bowling all-rounder who gives a great option with the bat as well. However, the New Zealand team management decided to go with an extra pacer for this particular match. Jacob Duffy has been appointed Cole McConchie replacement for the IND vs NZ T20 World Cup Final.

There's a mix of red and black soil on Ahmedabad's surface, so there can be extra bounce which will help the pacers early in the innings. It might be the reason behind New Zealand dropping Cole McConchie for the IND vs NZ final 2026 match. Adding to it, his replacement, Jacob Duffy is one of the best T20 bowlers in the world right now.

Opening Quote

“We're going with another seamer tonight, so no (Cole) McConchie. And Jacob Duffy comes back in. It looks like a very good surface, to be fair, so see if it does anything first up. But I think there'll be a lot of runs in it,” Santner said during the toss.

Closing Quote

McConchie's absence for the ICC T20 World Cup final comes as a big surprise since he picked up two crucial wickets in the semi-final against South Africa. Both of them were big wickets and he played a part in New Zealand's emphatic win. However, he didn't get to bowl further in the match.

NZ’s Lack of Off-Spin Helps Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan

New Zealand are playing without any quality off-spinner. They do have a part-time off-spinner in the face of Glenn Phillips, but it became difficult for them to create trouble for left-handed batters like Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan, two of the best T20 batsmen at the moment. Apart from him, the Black Caps only have Mitchell Santner, who is a left-arm spinner who might not even bowl against these batters.

Interestingly, both Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan struggled against off-spin early in the tournament. However, both of them played their part in the IND vs NZ T20 World Cup final with fine knocks.
