Kadidiatou Diani was a star in the making ever since she kicked a ball. Her talent was too obvious to ignore as she broke through very quickly. Keeping in line with expectations, she performed brilliantly and even exceeded the set expectations. She helped her country win a World Cup, albeit at youth level, and became a league winner with her club. Now she sets her sights on even better prizes as she is approaching the prime years of her career.
Diani often played football with boys in her community. She joined the local club Vitry as a 10-year-old and trained with boys as she was often the only girl in the locker room. Impressive performances there helped her win a move to Juvisy’s women's club (rebranded as Paris FC in 2017), which was known for developing talented stars.
She spent her teenage years with the clubs academy before breaking into the senior setup. She enjoyed a couple of stellar campaigns where she ended up scoring 23 goals for them. The phenomenal breakout meant she was rated highly in the football circles, and PSG signed her as they looked to challenge Lyon’s regime in both the country and continent.
Lyon regularly beat PSG to the league title and even got the last laugh in the Champions League final as well. Diani was signed to change that, and in her first season, she helped her club win the Coupe de France féminine in 2018. That was the start of something special as Diani scored goal after goal to lead them to a first league title in 2021. She ended up winning the Player of the Season award for her valuable contributions. Another Coupe de France title was wrapped up in 2022. During that period, she enjoyed the privilege of being one of the best-paid women's footballers thanks to PSG’s riches.
During her six-year stay with PSG, she scored 92 goals for the club, becoming their third-highest goalscorer of all time. However, she wasn’t able to help them consistently as Lyon beat them again in the 2020 Champions League semifinals.
Kadidiatou Diani’s relationship with PSG was getting fractured during the latter years of her stay, as she was involved in the aforementioned Hamraoui scandal. She took the side of Aminata Diallo as the whole club was split into two parts in 2021. Knowing it was time to take the next step in her career, she made a bold move by joining rivals Lyon in 2023.
However, the move was a mixed bag as Diani was plagued with injuries in the previous two seasons. She picked up two league titles and scored 34 in 62 games, scoring nearly 1 in 2. Two of them were goals in the finals against her ex-side, PSG in the finals in both seasons. She wasn’t able to make any meaningful contributions in the Champions League as they were beaten narrowly in the finals and semi-finals in two successive seasons.
The next season will play a huge role in her club career as she needs to help her side reclaim the continental throne.
Diani’s rapid growth at the club level meant she was invited to join the French youth teams. She scored 4 goals at the 2012 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup as France won the tournament. A third-place finish at the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup followed as she scored once.
Diani received her first senior call-up in 2017 as she made the squad for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2017. After appearing at the 2019 Women’s World Cup, she tasted the highest level of action in women’s sport.
Before the 2023 World Cup, there was controversy aplenty as Diani announced her retirement from the national team along with a host of stars, citing a lack of professionalism towards the team from the board. After several pleas, they all returned. Diani scored four goals at the tournament and assisted three times as they bowed out in the quarters after a dramatic shootout.
In the form of her life now, she is hopeful of guiding her team to an international trophy for the first time.
Kadidiatou Diani is a serial winner at the club level. She always plays starring roles in her club’s triumphs and walks away with the best awards.
