They are positioned second in the points table, and they find themselves ahead of stalwarts like Uruguay and Brazil as well. They have won seven games and lost only 2 games in the tournament so far.

Talking about Peru, the home team's hopes of qualifying directly in this round have been dashed. However, their FIFA World Cup hopes are still alive if they can pull a miraculous comeback to make it to the seventh spot, if other results go in their favour. Peru's recent form have been a bit concerning as they have won only a solitary game in the last five matches against Bolivia. The Estadio Nacional in the capital city of Lima came out in large numbers to support the home team as they seeked a win against second placed Ecuador in the next match.
