France starts their qualifying campaign against Ukraine at Tarczynski Arena, Wroclaw on September 5, 2025. The Les Bleus began the show steadily, before gradually passing the game. The away side enjoyed the majority of possession in the first half (62%), while Ukraine were happy defending. In the 10th minute, Michael Olise opened the scoring, but credit must be given to Barcola for his vision to pick out his teammate through a perfectly placed ball between two defenders near the byline. A few minutes later, the Ukrainian goalkeeper was called into action, but Mbappe narrowly missed it. Just before half-time, the Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe fumbled an easy chance to make it 2-0. The French football players were all over the home side, completely shutting them down in the initial phase of the game.

The second half saw France coming out more aggressively, with players going forward with the intention to close the game early. They were presented with several chances but couldn't capitalize on them. Olise scuffed wide, in an easy chance, later on, Dembele getting into action as well, but the result stayed the same. He tried to chip over the keeper inside the six-yard line, but the keeper was well alert of the situation. After a brief close call in Ukraine's half, they came close to equalizing but somehow missed the header. Culprit? Dovbyk. Still, that didn't slow them down. Just a minute later, Ukraine once again came close; however, this time it's the ‘POST’ that they hit. How did you miss this one, Zabarnyi? After a few nervy moments for the Les Blues, Mbappe killed the game, and how he chased down that harmless ball from Aurelien Tchouameni. Nonetheless, a calm yet thunderous strike into the bottom right corner. Goal number 51 for the superstar. Here are the Ukraine vs France player ratings.

Ukraine Player Ratings vs France

Here are the Ukraine player ratings.

Goalkeeper

Anatoliy Trubin - 7.5: Easily Ukraine's best player on the night, which says a lot. Trubin was peppered with shots and stood tall, making four saves, including two from inside the box. He couldn't do much about either goal, as his defense left him exposed. What stood out to us was his command of the area, claiming high balls confidently. Without him, the scoreline could have been much worse.

Defenders

Yukhym Konoplya - 6.0: A mixed bag for the right-back. He was tidy in possession with a 97% pass accuracy, which is impressive. However, we noticed he struggled defensively, winning only two of his six duels. He was often caught out of position by France's fluid attack. He tried to get forward but his crosses lacked quality.

Ilya Zabarnyi - 6.5: So unlucky not to have scored. His header cannoning off the woodwork was Ukraine's best moment of the match. Defensively, he was solid for the most part, making four clearances and a couple of crucial blocks. He did get dribbled past twice, but he put in a committed shift against a top-tier attack.

Oleksandr Zinchenko - 7.0: One of the few Ukrainian players who looked comfortable at this level. Zinchenko was a creative spark from deep, creating two chances and displaying his wide passing range. He was also diligent in his defensive duties, winning four of his five tackles. He tried to drive his team forward but was fighting a losing battle.

Mykola Matvienko - 6.5: The captain led by example with his effort, but it wasn't enough. He was a busy man, making six clearances and two interceptions. His passing from the back was generally good, but he and his defensive partners were simply overwhelmed by the movement and quality of the French forwards. A difficult night at the office.

Midfielders

Ivan Kalyuzhnyi - 5.5: From our perspective, a really poor performance. He was a passenger in midfield, winning just one of his eight duels. He also missed a big chance that could have potentially changed the complexion of the game. He struggled to keep up with the pace and movement of the French midfield and was a liability at times.

Georgiy Sudakov - 6.0: He just couldn't impose himself on the game. Sudakov had very few meaningful touches and lost possession frequently. We expected more creativity from him, but he was largely anonymous. A disappointing outing for a player with his technical ability. He was another who just looked a level below his opponents.

Oleksiy Gutsulyak - 6.5: A hard-working display, but one that lacked quality. He won an impressive eight duels, showing his combative nature. However, he was very sloppy on the ball, losing it 13 times. He put in the effort but his final product was consistently missing. A frustrating performance to watch.

Yegor Yarmolyuk - 6.5: A tidy and efficient performance on the ball, boasting an incredible 96% pass completion rate. He kept things simple and moved the ball well under pressure. However, he didn't offer much in terms of penetration or creativity in the final third. A solid, if unspectacular, performance.

Oleksandr Zubkov - 5.0: A night to forget for Zubkov. He was arguably the worst performer on the pitch. Losing possession an alarming 20 times is simply unacceptable. His error led directly to a French shot, and he offered absolutely nothing going forward. It was no surprise to see him substituted.

Forwards

Artem Dovbyk - 6.0: He was completely starved of service. Dovbyk had a meager 12 touches in his 76 minutes on the pitch. It's tough to rate a striker who is so isolated. He did have one big chance, which he failed to convert. He worked hard but was fighting a losing battle against a dominant French backline.

Substitutes

Various - N/A: The substitutes brought on by S. Rebrov failed to make any significant impact on the game as France continued to control proceedings until the final whistle.

Manager

Sergiy Rebrov - 6.0: His team came up against a far superior opponent, and it showed. The defensive setup was breached far too easily, and the team offered little threat going forward. While his hands were somewhat tied by the gulf in quality, his substitutions did little to change the flow of the match.

France Player Ratings vs Ukraine

Here are the France player ratings.

Goalkeeper

Mike Maignan - 7.0: A relatively quiet evening for the French number one. He made two saves when called upon and distributed the ball with his usual excellence. A clean sheet is a clean sheet, and he did everything asked of him with minimal fuss. A commanding and confident presence.

Defenders

Lucas Digne - 6.5: A steady performance from Digne. He wasn't spectacular but did his job effectively on the left flank. He was solid defensively and supported the attack when needed. Lost a few aerial duels but was otherwise reliable. A professional display.

Dayot Upamecano - 7.5: A rock at the back. Upamecano was strong, composed, and read the game exceptionally well. He won most of his duels and made several important clearances. His partnership with Konaté looked impenetrable. A very assured performance from the big defender.

Jules Koundé - 8.0: An outstanding all-around display from Koundé. He was flawless defensively, winning eight of his ten duels and making three tackles. He was also a threat going forward, creating a chance and showing great comfort on the ball. He completely nullified the threat down his side of the pitch.

Ibrahima Konaté - 8.0: Dominant. Konaté was a colossal presence for France. His clearance off the line was a crucial moment, and he was imperious in the air and in the tackle. He won four of his six duels and made key interceptions. We felt he was almost unbeatable tonight.

Midfielders

Aurélien Tchouaméni - 9.0: Our man of the match, without a doubt. A midfield masterclass. Tchouaméni completely ran the game from start to finish. He provided a sublime assist and created two other big chances. Defensively, he was a monster, winning five of his six tackles. It was a complete performance that showcased his world-class talent.

Michael Olise - 8.5: A fantastic performance from the winger. He got the crucial opening goal with a calm finish and was a constant menace. He created three chances, including one big chance, and his dribbling caused problems all night. A joy to watch when he's in this kind of form.

Désiré Doué - 6.5: A lively first half from the young midfielder. He had a few bright moments and got into some good positions, but his final product was lacking. He was substituted at halftime as Deschamps opted for a different approach. A decent showing with room for improvement.

Manu Koné - 8.0: A superb performance alongside Tchouaméni. Koné controlled the tempo with his crisp passing, completing 97% of them. He drew four fouls, showcasing his ability to carry the ball under pressure, and created four chances for his teammates. An incredibly classy and intelligent display.

Bradley Barcola - 7.0: It was a mixed performance, but ultimately a positive one. He provided a clever assist for the opening goal. However, he will be kicking himself for missing a huge chance later in the game. His energy and directness were valuable assets, even if he was a little raw at times.

Forwards

Kylian Mbappé - 7.5: The captain had a quiet game by his own ridiculous standards, but he still provided the decisive moment. He took his goal with clinical precision to kill the game off. He was a constant threat, even when not heavily involved, and his presence alone occupied the Ukrainian defence. Job done.

Substitutes

Various - N/A: The substitutes slotted in seamlessly to see out a comfortable victory, with France never losing control of the contest.

Manager

Didier Deschamps - 8.0: His game plan worked to perfection. Deschamps set his team up to dominate possession and exploit their technical superiority, and they executed it flawlessly. The early goal helped, and his side never took their foot off the gas. A tactical masterclass and a routine win for the World Cup winner.
