Highguard Beginner Guide: Tips and Tricks for New Players

Highguard is the latest Raid-shooter by Wildlight Entertainment, a team of former Apex Legends and Titanfall developers. In this game, you play as a Warden, a character who can use both guns and magical abilities. As part of a three-player squad, you are tasked with destroying the enemy base by grabbing the Shieldbraker Sword and initiating a Raid. The gameplay loop, however, is way more complicated than it appears, since this game mixes elements of many genres and their unique mechanics.

In this Highguard guide, you will learn how to play the right way with your teammates to capture objectives together.

Highguard Guide: 3v3 Raid Mode Explained

The main game mode of Highguard is its unique 3v3 Raid Mode. Here, two teams of three players are tasked with destroying the enemy base. Each match consists of five rounds in this order:

  1. Base and Warden Selection: Both teams decide which of the four base layouts they want, along with their respective Wardens.
  2. Loadout Selection and Defense Preparation: When the match starts, you select your loadout and start reinforcing walls in your base (like Rainbow Six: Siege and Valorant).
  3. Looting and Gearing Up: Players can now ride their Highguard Mounts outside on the explorable area of the map to collect equipment from lootboxes like Fortnite. You can also mine crystals (like you do in Minecraft) to use them as currency to buy equipment from the Shopkeeper called Flynn.
  4. Shieldbreaker: After the Gear Up phase, the Shieldbreaker spawns in the middle of the map. Your team should try to take the Shieldbreaker first from the enemy and go to their base to begin raiding it. Starting a raid shaves off 30 points from the base. The Shieldbreaker is dropped if the player holding it (marked on the map) dies.
  5. Sudden Death: If no team manages to start a Raid, a Sudden Death mode begins where all players have only one life. Eliminate all three enemies to automatically start the next phase.
  6. Raid: When the raid begins, you must either plant bombs on two of the enemy generators and blow them up or only destroy their Archon Stone, which is more difficult to pull off. During this phase, attackers have limited respawns. Destroying a generator depletes 35 points from the base health.

Highguard Tips and Tricks Beginners Should Know About

Matches in Highguard can last a long time since whittling down the health of the enemy base can take quite a few attempts. Knowing what to do in each phase is key to understanding the proper flow of the game by completing objectives one after the other. As a new player, you should know these Highguard tips and tricks we have included in this Highguard Beginner Guide:

1. Select the Right Loadout and Warden According to Your Playstyle

When the game starts, each player gets to select their loadout. This consists of two guns, your raid tool, and other breaching equipment. Depending on your playstyle, you can choose from many types of shotguns, SMGs, assault rifles, snipers, hammers, and even rocket launchers. It's important to know how to handle each gun since they have different ballistic properties.

We recommend having a balanced loadput consiting of:

  • One long-range weapon, like the Dynasty (assault rifle) or Ranger (sniper).
  • A short-range weapon like the Paladin (auto shotgun)or Viper (SMG).
  • The Rocket Launcher or the Hammer as your Raid Weapon.

As for your Wardens, learn the abilities and playstyle of all of them to figure out which ones you are more comfortable with. We recommend using the following beginner-friendly Wardens along with others that can be a part of Daily Quests:

  • Atticus (Attacker): Can throw Shockspears to deal damage, along with an ult that lets you hover in the air and throw more powerful shockdarts.
  • Kai (Defender): Lets you create ice walls for cover and repair broken walls in your base.
  • Una (Defender): Summon minions that deal damage to enemies and give you valuable loot.
  • Slade (Attacker): Lets you throw grandes that spew lava with an ult that can rain down hell from above.
  • Scarlet (Assault): Lets you turn invisible and shift through walls for a stealthy approach.

2. Barricade Doors and Walls

First, barricade the doors and walls of both your generators and your Anchor Stone using Reinforcements. Each player has five Reinforcements at the start of the round, and more can be bought from Trader Flynn using four Vesper shards.

Since there are three objectives you need to protect on your base, each player should select one of their buildings to armor up. It's essential to do so, as enemies will be forced to use raid tools to break them, which are otherwise breakable with normal guns and grenades. Remember to do so quickly since you only have a minute to do so at the start of every round.

3. Mine Vespers and Buy Armor

After a minute, you can head out into the open world to mine Vesper and collect more loot. As you roam around the large map on your trusty steed, you will find:

  • Weapon Chests: Gives you new weapons and other tactical items you can equip.
  • Vesper Crystals: Large blue crystals you can mine to get Vesper Shards. Hit the melee button at the right time repeatedly to break them.

In both the east and west sides of the map, you will find the shopkeeper with whom you can trade these Vesper Shards for better equipment. We recommend stocking up on at least six armor pieces, which cost five shards each. You can buy more after you run out of them, since you automatically consume one after they are depleted. Buy better rarity weapons when you have lots of disposable Vesper shards.

4. Ambush Enemies and Grab the Shieldbreaker

After two minutes of looting, the Shieldbreaker will appear on the map. You should always coordinate with your teammates to control the locations around it to engage with enemies with an advantage. Learn the layouts of each map and identify choke points you can control to ambush enemies. It's best to have a team of two mid-range fighters and one long-range shooter.

When engaged in gunfights, try using several evasive options like crouch shooting, slide shooting, and shooting from horseback. After defeating enemies, they will drop a soul orb that you can destroy to stop their teammates from reviving them. When your teammates die, you can touch their soul orb to revive them, which you can do while moving. However, it's best not to do so if you know you can die while doing so.

5. Stick Together When Raiding and Defending

In the Raid Phase, you can use your Raid Tools to blow up walls and enter the base to plant bombs on their generators. This is where gunplay and proper use of abilities become crucial since you must think strategically while planting and defusing the bomb. Your team should have a formation like:

  • While raiding: Let two players play inside the base, guarding the bomb while another player roams outside to gather intel on enemy locations.
  • While defending: Let one player be the defuser, while the other two characters guard them by taking positions inside and outside the building.

That's all for this Highguard Beginners Guide, consisting of tips and tricks you should know of when you first start playing this game. While this game has a lot of systems and mechanics in place, understanding when to do what is key to winning matches.
