The Asian Cricket Council recently announced the schedule and venue for the much-anticipated Asia Cup 2025. The tournament is set to be hosted by the UAE and is scheduled to take place from September 9 to September 28. It has already started making headlines with arch-rivals India and Pakistan being placed in the same group.

Fans can witness these arch-rivals facing each other more than once in the same tournament, if they both qualify for the finals. However, the spotlight has also shifted to some unexpected changes in India’s probable squad for the tournament, which will be played in the T20 format. India's Test captain Shubman Gill might return to the T20 fold with questions over Jasprit Bumrah's availability.

Likely India Squad Asia Cup 2025

India’s star pacer Jasprit Bumrah is likely to be ruled out of the tournament to manage his workload. Bumrah is currently the part of the squad for the England series. With him being injury-prone, the selectors might not consider him for India squad Asia Cup 2025. Bumrah’s unavailability will be a huge blow to India’s pace arsenal.

The star pacer also missed the Champions Trophy earlier this year; however, the Indian team ended up winning the tournament. While Bumrah will be missed if he doesn't play, his absence opens the door for a young replacement, most probably Delhi’s Harshit Rana.

India’s Test captain Shubman Gill is also expected to make a comeback to the T20 fold. Gill last played a T20I way back in July 2024 against Sri Lanka at Pallekele. However, he has been overlooked due to various reasons since then. Since he is also a part of Tests and ODIs, the board has decided to keep him away from T20Is. Moreover, India have adopted a more aggressive batting pair in the form of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson in T20Is.

But the biggest surprise could be the omission of India’s current T20I skipper, Suryakumar Yadav, who is still recovering from an injury and might miss the high-voltage tournament in September. Suryakumar recently underwent a surgery for sports hernia in Munich, which went successful. It remains to be seen whether he gets fully fit for the Asia Cup 2025 or not.

Shubman Gill to Become India's T20I Captain?

On the other hand, Gill’s expected return can also be a surprising move for the fans, but Sanju Samson’s recent performance has made the way a little easier for Gill. Samson wasn’t really impactful in India’s last T20I series, which was against England. His highest score in the five-match series was 26, so it says a lot about his form. He was also unfit during the Indian Premier League (IPL) earlier this year and missed a no. of matches. So, Abhishek Sharma might have a new opening partner in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025.

Ever since Suryakumar Yadav was announced the captain of the team in the shortest format, his performance has seen a drastic dip. Although he was the second-highest run scorer in IPL 2025, but his recent international performances in the shortest format haven't been great. He registered two ducks in the five-match T20I series against England. With him being injured, Shubman Gill might become the new India captain in India's Likely Squad for Asia Cup 2025. Star all-rounder Axar Patel is likely to serve as the vice-captain of the team. Axar also led the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025.

India Squad for Asia Cup 2025 (Probable)
