The Indian Cricket Team’s squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 was revealed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The tournament will be played in India and Sri Lanka and will see 20 teams taking part in it. Since the last few days, the Indian squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 has been in the news, and there have been a lot of concerns over the form of two players in captain Suryakumar Yadav and his deputy Shubman Gill.

Both Suryakumar Yadav and his deputy, Shubman Gill, struggled to score runs and failed to register a single fifty in the format in 2025. This saw fans lashing out at both the batters, especially with Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, and others being on the bench.

Shubman Gill Dropped From India T20 World Cup 2026 Squad

With both struggling to score runs, it was Shubman Gill who had to face the snub. Despite being the vice-captain, he was dropped from the side, and in his place, Ishan Kishan was added to the team on the back of his solid performances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025. Shubman Gill's getting dropped came as a massive surprise. Not many expected him to get dropped. Although he was short on runs, the player of his quality can never be written off, especially after the numbers that he possesses in the IPL.

On dropping Shubman Gill, chief selector Ajit Agarkar openly mentioned that Gill was short of runs and they had to take the unfortunate call. Speaking during the press conference, he said,

Shubman Gill or Suryakumar Yadav: Who Deserved to Be Dropped?

With Gill now getting dropped for the T20 World Cup 2026, questions have been raised about whether he deserved to get dropped over the skipper. Suryakumar Yadav Captain record has been fantastic, but as a batter, he has been even worse than Gill.

In the last 22 innings, Suryakumar Yadav averages 12.84 and has a strike rate of 117.87. On the contrary, Gill scored 291 runs from 15 innings, with a highest score of 47, averaging 24.25 at a strike rate of 137.26 this year. Based on these stats and all, it was Suryakumar who deserved to get dropped, but dropping a captain just ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026 wouldn’t have been right, as it would have disrupted the entire balance.

He will now have the New Zealand series to prove his worth. Heading into the T20 World Cup 2026, India would need their skipper to fire, and if he finds his touch back, India will be one of the hot favourites to win the title and show why he is considered one of the best T20 batsman in the world.
